Beach Options in Costa Maya

As Costa Maya is primarily a tourist region and is for the most part a manufactured cruise port that is relatively isolated other than Mayan ruins and fishing villages surrounding the port area.  The beach options are limited and most suffer from heavy sea grass / sea weed for portions of the year which can cause issues enjoying the water in the beach area.

Maya Chan Beach

Maya Chan is the highest rated beach option in Costa Maya. It is however the furthest beach option from the Costa Maya cruise port (except the Seven Colors Lagoon which is on a lake) but offers many options to make it well worth it. You have to book a reservation at Maya Chan similar to a shore excursion and they will reserve a cabana for you. The representatives from Maya Chan pick you up and drop you back off at the the port and it is about a 20 minute drive to Maya Chan. You get a private cabana with two chairs, a bed and a hammock and they bring food and drinks to you at your cabana (Chips, salsa, Guacamole, Rum punch). An extensive taco buffet lunch is served around noon and all throughout the day the bar will serve up whatever specialty drinks you desire. They do their best to keep the sea grass clear of the beach but there is also a freshwater pool to enjoy as well. They also have kayaks, snorkel gear and floating beach mats for use and will deliver you drinks by kayak while you are in the water. Oh, and did we mention free WiFi?

Yaya Beach

Yaya beach is about 10 minutes from the cruise port and is accessible by taxi or shuttle to and from Costa Maya for about $4 per person. Day passes are available for around $25 which includes unlimited local food (chips, salsa, guacamole, various tacos) and drinks for the day. One drawback to this beach option is the numerous local vendors trying to sell things to you throughout the day. A simple “no, thank you” sends them on their way but the peddlers can constantly interrupt your relaxation throughout the entire day.

Mahahual Beach

Mahahual beach is the closest beach to the Costa Maya cruise port and many of the beach break excursions end up here which makes it very busy. The beach area also has numerous vendors trying to peddle things and massages to cruise passengers and the bathrooms leave a lot to be desired. At the cruise port many vendors also try to sell packages to this beach which tends to leave people upset when they arrive and are disappointed with the package or the beach area. Taking a taxi on your own to the beach and then deciding if you want a package at one of the bars or resorts is your best option since you can see what you are getting before purchasing. Most if not all of the restaurants offer you beach chair just for buying something from them so there is no need to rent a chair in any package deals you are offered.
